What do you wrap your stamp in?

From: R (ontario_cacher@yahoo.ca) | Date: 2006-10-10 12:19:13 UTC-04:00
When putting together a letterbox, I initially wrapped my stamps in a small piece of paper towel, then put the wrapped stamp in a small baggie. But after a few uses the paper towel is covered in ink - messy.

This summer I noticed that a couple of letterboxers were wrapping their stamps in dark felt material (and not putting them in a baggie). Seemed like a good idea - it wasn't messy and kept the ink from getting on the rest of the box contents. So I switched and made little felt pockets to put my stamp into and I didn't place the pocket in a baggie.

I recently got a report that 2 of my boxes have mildewy felt. Hmmmm. I guess felt isn't the best solution.

What does everyone else do? Do you wrap your stamps? In what?

I do wrap mine in felt, but I put them in a baggie. The main reason
I wrap them at all is just to keep the ink off the inside of the
bags and, as you said, paper towels get inky fairly quickly.

I also wrap mine in felt and then place them inside a baggie. I tried cardboard stamp holders with a velcro closure, which were nice but seemed to be continually tearing apart. I also tried felt pockets but they tended to hold moisture. I think just wrapping the stamp in a piece of felt allows the air to still circulate a bit and I haven't had a problem with the felt becoming damp.

Ditto for me. Haven't had a problem doing it this way.

Thanks for the feedback. I also asked the question on AQ and the consensus is to use felt but put the felt covered stamp in a baggie. I'm also going to change the letterbox containers to lock n locks to help keep the moisture out.

Yep, I put the logbook in a ziplock bag labelled "LOGBOOK" and the stamp in
a ziplock bag labelled "STAMP" and then put both of those ziplock bags in
another ziplock bag labelled "BOTH STAMP & LOGBOOK". And then all that goes
in a lock 'n' lock container. One of the last letterboxes I found had all
three bags but all three bags had been left unsealed. Not good. At least
the lock 'n' lock container had been closed properly.

I usually try to coordinate the felt with the logbook.

Sometimes hotels offer little cotten-flannel bags for polishing shoes,
as an amenity. I've been using these for my stamps. (They'd never been
used as polishing cloths). I can get about three stamps worth of fabric
from each glove. I use the corners, which are seamed on 2 sides (and
sew a third jacket with remaining fabric.). Then the stamp in its
flannel jacket goes into a baggy.

I have not had mildew yet, but my boxes are all less than a year old.

I actually use a layering system.

The first layer inside is a Capalene product with zipped venting
release pockets followed by a layer of fine woven wool (I usually
bring the sheep with me when I plant so the wool is really fresh)
with reinforced edge binding with a triple nylon fishing line and
finally the outer layer is Gortex (tm) with reinforced side and
center seams, and of course then I spray the whole thing with acrylic
waterproofing and anti tick and mosquito repellant. That keeps
everything nice and dry . . . oh were you talking about the stamps? I
thought it was about underwear. never mind then.
